At first glance, it can seem a little tenuous though: What's coffee got to do with Kaizen? Well that's the funny thing! You see, Kaizen has become something of a nucleus of most businesses' DNA. And as we all know, coffee has very much been a critical feature of daily office life too. So the two go hand-in-hand!

 

Messy kitchen? 5S.

Forgetting to reorder coffee? Kanban.

You put off reordering coffee because stock-takes, placing purchase orders are a mundanity and a slow process for a simple request? Total Quality Management.

Said coffee reorder arrives too late, and everyone's grumpy? JIT.

So maybe now it's becoming more apparent, given that these are all part of the extended Kaizen ethos, that Kaizen and Coffee are great partners!

A Workplace of Continuous Improvement:

Kaizen: Also known as continuous improvement, is a long-term approach to work that systematically seeks to achieve small, incremental changes in processes in order to improve efficiency and quality.

It is often the smallest of tasks, and the sheer quantity of them which are big time-eaters. By removing them, and better managing them by using improvements achieved through smarter processes and technology use, the benefits of Kaizen become apparent.

 

TQC: Total Quality Control Management instilling a culture in which an organisation aims to continuously improves high-quality products and services deliverability to its customers customers.

The less time spent dealing with the mundanities of office-life, or improving the efficiency in dealing with them, the more time you have to spending on critical tasks.

 

In the cases of both Kaizen and TQC, Smart Fulfilment removes the often arduous task of stock counting and reordering by automating the process.

 

Better Stock Management:

Kanban: Which translates from the Japanese term for "signboard" or "billboard" is a scheduling system for lean manufacturing and just-in-time manufacturing (JIT). Taiichi Ohno, an industrial engineer at Toyota, developed kanban to improve manufacturing efficiency. Kanban is one method to achieve JIT.

Whilst the practicalities of Kanban are still beneficial, the usage of physical stock management "signboards" is prone to mistake, inconvenience, and reliant on the usage and maintenance of tangible objects. 

Digitalising the principle of Kanban is the next logical step in its' evolution. Trello, for instance is a great example of digital Kanban. So specifically for Berlin's Coffee as a Service, Smart Fulfilment replaces manual stock reordering reminders, and makes great use of the coffee-maker's unique RFID stock tracking function, and IoT connectivity to monitor your stock usage (and trigger reordering processes, solely in the digital realm.

 

 

Just-in-time (JITmanufacturing, also known as just-in-time production, is a methodology aimed developed by Toyota primarily at reducing flow times within production system as well as response times from suppliers and to customers.

As the Berlin machine is 3G connected and has inbuilt has stock management connectivity communicating with the Coffee Cloud, the reordering of new green coffee beans, maintenance, and repairs is fully automated, remotely accessable and virtually instantaneous.

5S is a workplace organisation method that uses a list of five more Japanese words: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke. These have been conveniently translated into English to also start with the letter "S" as: "Sort", "Set In Order", "Shine", "Standardise" and "Sustain".

It doesn't just relate to having a clean desk at work -- like all Kaizen methodologies, they permeate all aspects of workplaces; with a particular emphasis on the most frequently used or trafficked areas. The office kitchenette is no exception (rather, it's likely a prime target).

The RFID laden green coffee bean pouches provide a useful solution to achieving Kaizen objects. For instance, 5S is implemented, by reducing clutter and uncleanliness by preventing spillage of goods, and pre-measuring portions, reducing or reusing wastage (dual purpose coffee filter), and ensuring you don't carry an unnecessarily large portion of stock on hand with smart fulfilment.
